Lunada Bay is a highly regarded area of Palos Verdes Estates with a mild climate, good schools, and custom-designed homes in a wide price range.  On the upper end of value are the ocean-front homes on Paseo del Mar that feature wide street setbacks, gated approaches, and incomparable ocean views.  Nearby in the center of Lunada Bay are smaller homes with entry-level pricing.  These are found on both sides of Palos Verdes Drive West.  Lunada Bay also offers condominiums and a few townhouses.

Historically, the area north of Palos Verdes High School was known as "Margate," but that identity was lost to a large extent some years ago when several multiple listing services were combined and homes in  "Margate" were integrated into the listing of Lunada Bay homes.

Lunada Bay is about three miles southwest of Malaga Cove along Palos Verdes Drive West.  It encompasses land from the ocean bluffs to the borders with Rancho Palos Verdes and Montemalaga on the east and from Bluff Cove to the border of Rancho Palos Verdes on the south.

There is a landscaped median strip that runs the entire length of the area from Bluff Cove on the north to the border with Rancho Palos Verdes on the south.  It has a decomposed granite trail in the center for jogging as seen in the photograph below.

The area has natural beauty and enthusiastic residents have joined together to improve the community, resulting in improved parklands, new parks, and organized efforts to rebuild the swimming pools at Palos Verdes High School, among others.  Coomunity activities focus around the activities involving students in the three level of schools that are represented in the area, children's and adult sports organizations, area clubs and civic organizations, and the active Lunada Bay Homeowners Association.

An Active Community

Lunada Bay is known for its community spirit, demonstrated each year when residents and the Lunada Bay Homeowners Association put on a festival in the shopping center known as the Harvest Festival.  Also, summer concerts are being offered in the new Lunada Bay park for residents to enjoy with picnic meals at sunset.

Lunada Bay also is coveted by surfers who find the cove very special.  In the center of Lunada Bay is a fountain that was named for school children who raised the funds needed for its construction.  It is located across from the shopping on Palos Verdes Drive West.

The Lunada Bay area is a vital part of the city of Palos Verdes Estates, having been energized to improve its public areas under the direction of an active Lunada Bay Homeowners Association in combination with other active groups representing schools, sports clubs and civic groups.

Lunada Bay holds a unique advantage over other areas of the Peninsula, being the only neighborhood where all three levels of school are within about one mile of each other!  As a result, the Lunada Bay area attracts many families and with them a wealth of activities for youngsters and adults alike.  Organized sports, such as soccer and Little League teams, and cultural and educational activities are examples.  Surfers are also drawn to Lunada Bay where they descend the bluffs carrying surfboads to enjoy the famous wave action in the bay.

Schools

Lunada Bay has the unique claim to be the only area on the Palos Verdes Peninsula where all three levels of the school system are within about one mile of each other.  Consequently, the area has been a magnet for families whose youngsters can attend all grade levels in their own neighborhood.

The elementary level, grades first through fifth and Kindergarten, attend Lunada Bay School located on Paseo Lunado close to the ocean bluff.  The school occupies an entire block.  Kindergarten is separated from the rest of the campus, having its own building and playground.

There are a number of "pocket parks" in Lunada Bay plus parkland along the ocean bluffs, in the median strip of Palos Verdes Estates, and in trails and on hillsides.  Parkland accounts for a full 28% of the land in this city.  Roadways are additional, thus the total land in the public domain has been estimated to be about 50%.

Examples of the pocket parks tucked away in the neighborhoods of Lunada Bay are shown below.

Unique Neighborhood Activities

The new Lunada Bay Park was the site of a Summer Concert last year.  It was a tremendous success and is expected to be repeated as an annual event.
